EXCITEMENT BUILDS TOWARDS THE 5TH SCAPE CHRISTCHURCH BIENNIAL
Local and international artists are at work on new artworks which will be realised in urban spaces around Christchurch city this September.
SCAPE 2008 will be the fifth biennial of art in public space and this year has the title Wandering Lines: Towards a New Culture of Space.
Director Deborah McCormick says SCAPE 2008 will see the installation of dynamic new temporary artworks in public spaces, featuring work by 30 outstanding contemporary artists from more than 20 countries.
“Wandering Lines: Towards a New Culture of Space will challenge peoples’ perception of the cultural and urban texture of the city,” she says. “It is a response to the changing nature of cities under transformation globally and invites people to take a fresh look at their city and the spaces within it.”
The Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu has again partnered with the Art & Industry Biennial Trust to present SCAPE 2008. The Gallery is an ideal place to begin a tour of the biennial, which will encourage people to wander through the central city into key locations in the suburbs.
SCAPE 2008 also marks the ten year anniversary of Art & Industry, which will present its seventh permanent artwork to Christchurch’s collection of public artworks.
The exhibition is being overseen by two internationally recognised curators – Danae Mossman (NZ) and Fulya Erdemci (Turkey).
The two curators will be in Christchurch to launch the exhibition at a public talk at the Christchurch Art Gallery on March 27, during which they will unfold ideas underpinning the theme.
SCAPE 2008 Wandering Lines: Towards a New Culture of Space runs from 19 September – 2 November 2008.
